As spring approaches, so does allergy season, bringing with it sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. For many children, environmental allergies can mimic the symptoms of a common cold, making it challenging for parents to determine the best course of action. At SouthCoast Health Pediatrics, we’re here to help you recognize allergy symptoms and find effective ways to manage them.

Recognizing Allergy Symptoms

Spring allergies are triggered by airborne allergens such as pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers. These allergens can cause symptoms that closely resemble those of a cold, including congestion, cough, and postnasal drip. However, there are key differences:

  • Allergies typically do not cause fever, while colds often come with mild fevers.
  • Sneezing and itchy eyes or nose are common allergy symptoms but are less frequently associated with colds.
  • Cold symptoms generally improve within a week, whereas allergy symptoms can persist as long as the allergen exposure continues.

Managing Allergy Symptoms

If your child experiences seasonal allergies, there are several strategies to help minimize discomfort:

  • Reduce exposure to allergens by keeping windows closed during high pollen days and using air purifiers indoors.
  • Encourage frequent handwashing to remove pollen that may be picked up outdoors.
  • Use antihistamines to help alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and congestion. Many over-the-counter options are available, but consult with your child’s pediatrician to determine the best choice.
  • Monitor pollen counts and limit outdoor activities when pollen levels are high.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If your child’s symptoms persist despite treatment, interfere with daily activities, or worsen over time, it may be time to visit your pediatrician. Allergy testing and prescription treatments may provide additional relief.

At SouthCoast Health Pediatrics, we are dedicated to helping families navigate allergy season with ease.
