In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, SouthCoast Health’s Dr. Kayla Poe, a board-certified internist at our Pooler location, appeared on WTOC’s Morning Break to discuss the importance of diabetes prevention and early detection.
Dr. Poe emphasized the role of diet and lifestyle in the development of diabetes, noting that nearly 2 million Georgians live with the disease. She shared common symptoms of diabetes, such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, and persistent fatigue, and advised viewers to be proactive by scheduling diabetes screenings.
“Screenings are essential,” said Dr. Poe. “If you catch diabetes early, you can prevent serious health complications like heart attacks and strokes.” She highlighted that adults over 35 should be tested for diabetes, with earlier screenings recommended for those with risk factors such as high blood pressure, a sedentary lifestyle, or obesity.
This reminder comes at an ideal time, encouraging people to make informed choices while enjoying the holiday season. Watch Dr. Poe’s appearance on WTOC to learn more about diabetes.
