Dr. Akinniran Abisogun Enhances Care for Postpartum Women with Cardiovascular Issues through the Mom’s Heart Matters Program

Monday, July 1, 2024

Dr. Akinniran A. Abisogun, a cardiologist at SouthCoast Health, brings his expertise in interventional cardiology to Liberty Regional Medical Center’s Mom’s Heart Matters (MHM) program. This initiative aims to support new mothers facing cardiovascular issues and alleviate the disproportionately high hypertension-related mortality rate among postpartum women of color.

“The biggest misconception is that once the baby is delivered all is well,” says Dr. Abisogun in a video about this program. “That is actually one of the most dangerous times for the mother and her heart, right after the baby is delivered.”

Since its inception in January 2023, MHM has provided significant relief, bridging a gap for postpartum women of color. By integrating innovation and technology, the program creates a safety net for high-risk mothers, allowing clinicians to monitor participants’ health status in real-time. This approach helps curate individualized health management plans for each participant.

Mom’s Heart Matters is an interactive digital therapy program designed to reduce hypertension-related maternal mortality, health disparities caused by social determinants of health, postpartum depression, emergency department visits, and hospital readmissions.

“We have individual stories and data that show we are helping save moms’ lives,” shares Dr. Abisogun in this podcast. “...What we have here is really beautiful, a lot of commitment, and a lot of energy. We care a lot about this program.”

Additionally, MHM’s resources are structured to increase enrollment in the hospital's cardiovascular health program, promote breastfeeding initiation and continuation, foster self-confidence in caring for oneself and the baby, and promote maternal well-being.

MHM is created in partnership with Georgia Family Connection Partnership, Amerigroup, Georgia OBGYN Society , Morehouse School of Medicine, and Liberty Regional Medical Center with support from Annie E. Casey Foundation. To learn more about Mom’s Heart Matters visit GomoHealth.com/MomsHeartMatters.
