With May being National High Blood Pressure Education Month, WTOC’s “Morning Break” TV news program sat down with Dr. Danielle Mankin, a family medicine physician with SouthCoast Health, to discuss how to stay on top of high blood pressure.
An annual blood pressure check, she said, is the most effective way to keep tabs on things, as most high blood pressure is asymptomatic. However, extremely high blood pressure can result in headaches, which is the most common side effect. Uncontrolled and untreated high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, heart disease, and strokes.
In addition to routine doctor visits and getting on appropriate medication when needed, Dr. Mankin suggests tactics such as a low-salt diet and good water intake to help lower blood pressure.
