The end of a school year is always a busy and exciting time for both parents and students, but for those facing graduation, levels of both can be even higher. From completing final school exams and projects, to attending last sporting events, end-of-year ceremonies, and big celebrations, there are a lot of details to manage. On top of all that, graduation can bring a tsunami of emotions, including joy, sadness, pride, doubt, future fear, and even jealousy.
The last thing you need now is to get sick. So to help you and your graduate navigate the unavoidable stress that commences with commencement — and keep it from impacting your health — we have a few suggestions.
“It’s understandably tempting to let busy schedules and demands get in the way of healthy sleep and eating, especially when you know the season of stressors may be temporary,” acknowledges Amanda Jones, FNP-BC, “But that’s often when you need them most.”
Many of the things that help keep you healthy throughout the rest of the year will be especially beneficial during this time. In particular, getting plenty of rest will allow both you and your graduate to feel even-keeled and energized. As well as frequent handwashing can help prevent illnesses during this busy and exciting time.
Your whole family will need to be fueled in other healthy ways, too. Rather than letting them grab fast food or rely on the vending machine, supply your senior with a healthy lunch, and make sure there are plenty of nutritional, energy-boosting snacks around. Staying well-hydrated with plenty of water will also keep you both alert and high-functioning.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all there is to do in preparation for college and while celebrating the accomplishments of high school, but until they walk across the stage at graduation, your teen is still a student, first and foremost. Sit down together regularly to review deadlines, and prioritize studying for final tests. Support them in keeping up good communication with their teachers, to make sure everyone is aware of their academic standing, and what’s needed to finalize this important semester. Set clear goals together, celebrate completion over perfection, and make sure there’s time for much needed fun and relaxation in between things. Keep whiteboards or lists of important dates, assignments, and deadlines. This helps keep everything in line and gives a sense of accomplishment, as they check things off. Remember to take things one day at a time.

Your annual physical is a great time to talk about major changes and milestones, but remember that your healthcare team is there to support you between your regular check-ups, too. If you or your teen are experiencing symptoms of excessive anxiety such as major mood swings, withdrawal from peers or favorite hobbies, frequent stomach or headaches, or panic attacks, schedule an appointment with your doctor to find solutions.
