If you have a chronic condition that requires routine checks and you have not seen your physician as prescribed, please contact your physician’s office as soon as possible. Learn why you should not wait to get needed healthcare.
A recent article in The Washington Post reports that, while hospitals have been filled with patients for coronavirus, other types of patients have simply stopped coming to the hospital. As stated in this Washington Post article, “Five weeks into a nationwide coronavirus lockdown, many doctors say the pandemic has produced a silent sub-epidemic of people who need care at hospitals but dare not come in. They include people with inflamed appendices, infected gall bladders, bowel obstructions, and, more ominously, chest pains and stroke symptoms, according to these physicians and early research.”
But why is this happening? Have people across the country simply become healthier? Unfortunately, no. People are just too afraid to walk into a hospital or physician’s office for fear of catching the coronavirus.
SouthCoast Health has seen a drastic decrease of patient visits for chronic care management. Patients with conditions such as diabetes, COPD, heart failure and hypertension are choosing to put off their scheduled or routine visits with their physicians. “This is a major and life-threatening issue sadly,” SouthCoast Health’s CEO John Marrero stated. “Because of this fear of COVID-19, treatment for many issues that benefit from early intervention are being delayed or not happening at all.”
SouthCoast Health recommends that you not be afraid to see your physician for whatever health reason you might be facing. When in doubt, it’s better to be safe rather than be sorry. Our facilities have taken extreme precautions to keep our offices safe for patient visits. Additionally, SouthCoast Health is happy to offer virtual visits when possible.
