With September being National Cholesterol Education Month, SouthCoast Health cardiologist Dr. Akinniran Abisogun appeared on WTOC Mid-Morning Live to discuss cholesterol awareness.
Dr. Abisogun informed the viewers that the American Heart Association’s guidelines are to have an initial screening test with a lipid panel around age 20, no matter what your risk factors are. This initial screening gives your healthcare provider a baseline to track your cholesterol levels as you age. The screening has an important role in cholesterol awareness.
“You don’t know your cholesterol is high, until it’s a problem,” Dr. Abisogun explained. “What we want to do as doctors is prevent it from becoming a big issue.”
Dr. Abisogun emphasized the importance of the role of diet and exercise in the prevention process. Avoiding foods with high cholesterol such as animal fats and shellfish, along with eating a plant-based diet and oily fish, helps us manage our cholesterol to healthy levels.
